The concert includes music by Billy Strayhorn, Thad Jones, Herbie Hancock, Red Garland, Alan Baylock, Fred Sturm, Horace Silver and Bob Curnow. Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 p.m. The YSU Dana School of Music presents four YSU Jazz Combos on in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room. The concert features the music of Grant Green, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, Booker T. Jones, Tim Green, YSU Jazz Faculty member Alton Merrell, and student compositions with American songbook standards and jazz standard repertoire. Free and open to the public. Thursday, April 16, 4 p.m. Twenty-four faculty members receive the 2015 YSU Distinguished Professor Award at a ceremony in the DeBartolo Stadium Club at Stambaugh Stadium on the YSU campus.
Thursday, April 16, 6:30 p.m. YSU participates in Take Back the Night, an international march and rally against sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, stalking, and other forms of gender-based violence. The march begins at at The Rock on the YSU campus core and continues to Cafaro House. A Speak Out and Bystander Program will follow in the Cafaro House Multipurpose room.
Thursday, April 16. The YSU Dana School of Music’s Concert Band and Chamber Ensembles perform at Stambaugh Auditorium, Youngstown. Faculty composer David Morgan’s 2003 composition Dark Wood for marimba quartet, and Dan Trueman’s Palimpsest – Concerto for alto saxophone and percussion ensemble will be performed. Performers include YSU Percussion Ensemble; alto saxophonist graduate student Wilson Poffenberger; the Woodwind Quintet; and YSU Concert Band.
