Wear red to health fair April 18

the linksParticipants are encouraged to wear red to signify support for women’s heart health when they attend “300 Sisters in Red,” a health fair planned for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.

The event is sponsored by The Links, Incorporated Youngstown Chapter, with co-sponsors YSU, Mercy Health, Anthem and the American Heart Association. It is the sponsors’ 10th annual health fair. The program won national honors from The Links, Incorporated this year and in 2008 for effectively delivering health services to underserved populations.

Participants must register for fasting blood health screenings, from 8 and 10 a.m. Other screenings available include cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body fat, bone density, colon cancer, HIV, and stroke risk assessment.

A light, healthy lunch will be served, with cardiologist Fidelis O. Mkparu, M.D., as the keynote luncheon speaker, focusing his presentation on depression and how it affects the heart.

Fitness training and massages will also be offered, along with breakout sessions featuring speakers Dr. Michelle J. McCollin, Dawn Powell, Dr. Keisha Robinson, Jaison Boyd, Dr. Cesar Augustin and Monica Hoskins-Vann.

Joan Boyd, YSU professor, Clinical Laboratory Science, is event chair; Anne R. Cobbin is The Links, Incorporated Youngstown Chapter president.

Parking is free in the M-2 parking deck off Fifth Avenue, and YSU students will be available to assist participants with disabilities.
