Check out what's happening this week at Youngstown State University.Monday, Sept. 26, 1 p.m. Artist Amber Kempthorn lectures in Bliss Hall’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery. The event is free and open to the public and is part of the YSU Department of Art Visiting Lecture Series.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 9:30 a.m. The YSU Melnick Medical Museum dedicates the new exhibit in Cushwa Hall on Social Welfare. The event will be in the lower level of Cushwa, in front of the display cases. “Welfare: A response to need” is a series of posters, photos and other items that track the history of social welfare from the 1600s to today.

Wednesday, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. Jon White, Rear Admiral (Ret.) U.S. Navy, President & CEO, Consortium for Ocean Leadership, presents “Ocean & Climate vs. National & Global Security” in Room B100 of Cushwa Hall as part of the YSU Lecture Series on Energy and the Environment.

Thursday, Sept. 29, 4:30 p.m. “Traficant: The Congressman of Crimetown,” a 90-minute documentary directed by Mahoning Valley native and graduate of Eric Murphy, makes its Youngstown premiere at a free screening in Room B100 of Cushwa Hall on campus.

vanya-and-masha1Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2. University Theater opens its 2016-17 season with the comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” in Bliss Hall’s Spotlight Theater on campus. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday matinee performances are at 2 p.m. The show also runs Oct. 1 and 7, 8 and 9.

Friday, Sept. 30, noon. Guitarist Ben Monder, who played on David Bowie’s 25th studio album, “Blackstar,” presents a free, public Jazz clinic in Bliss Hall Room 2222.

Friday, Sept. 30, 4 p.m. The late George Harrison, guitarist for The Beatles, is the subject of a lecture by John Covach, director of the University of Rochester’s Institute for Popular Music, in Bliss Hall.

Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 8 p.m. YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium presents “Fall Skywatch.” The planetarium also shows “Legends – Perseus and Andromeda at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

Saturday, Oct. 1, 4 p.m. YSU football opens the Missouri Valley Conference schedule against South Dakota at Stambaugh Stadium.

Sunday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Department of Theater and Dance hosts the 11th annual Dance Festival, presented by the YSU Dance Ensemble, in Beeghly Center on campus. The Festival is a series of master classes geared to anyone age 13 through adult, and concludes with an informal dance concert by participants and guest artists. The cost is $40 per person. Sunday, Oct. 2, 3 p.m. YSU soccer takes on Wright State at Farmers National Bank Field on campus.
